For this piece I consulted on the lighting system and designed and built the fixtures. Within the structure itself were addressable tiny points of light illuminating from the ends of sections of tubing. The piece was also externally lit with a modular addressable power LED lighting system, which I had designed for a previous install of Esther’s, with the addition of some custom laser cut enclosures.

From Esther’s website estherrolinson.co.uk:

“TEN THOUSAND THOUGHTS is a hand-constructed sculptural light installation that originates from a selection of Esther Rolinson’s rule-based drawings. Like an extendable system, it can continue to grow. The artwork is composed of folded aluminium tubes worked by Rolinson in a daily meditative making process. The artist creates the shapes using a series of actions and each one is completely unique.

It has a delicate bespoke lighting system designed especially for the piece with creative technologist Luke Woodbury. The lights are controlled by generative programming used to produce patterns that are influenced by and directly derived from Rolinson’s drawings. To develop this aspect, Rolinson has worked with artist programmer Sean Clark.”
