Phylogenesis was a kinetic, sonic sculpture created for the 'A Thing About Machines' festival in 2008. The piece was a glass 'egg' with a rotating speaker on top, when a user approached the piece it stopped and pointed at them and took an audio recording. The speaker then recommenced rotation and repeatedly played the recording. The piece explored concepts of emergent behaviour in artificial intelligence and human/computer interaction. In fact the piece took on an emergent confrontational and mocking personality as it stared at people and then mimicked them. This installation was a prototype for a larger one with several of these sculptures that would communicate with one another, which is yet to be realised.
